Attach Files

WebElect/HowToGroups > WebElect/HowToSearch > WebElect/Fundraising

Files can be attached inside a note by inserting the web address to the file. You can not upload files to the server for reasons explained below. We do list options for enabling web addresses for any local files you want to be able to attach.

Copy and paste the file link into note

Link is then clickable from webElect.net

This means any file you want to attach must have a valid web browser address. This is not a problem if you are using Google Apps or a similar online application to create and store your files, but if you create and store your files on a local computer or network you must take additional steps to create web browser addresses for your files.

Options

  • Use an online backup or storage service to store your documents online. These services then allow you to access files through a web address which can be used as an attachment link in webElect.net
  • Turn on the web server service on your computer or your local network server so that files can be accessed through a web browser using an http:// address. We have created a set of instructions for activating a web server in Windows Vista (on Home Premium edition).

- note that webelect.net users clicking the link to the file will not be able to access the file if it is not accessible from their location. ie If the address to the file is only accessible from the local office network, a user accessing webElect.net outside the office network will not be able to access the file.

Why This Way?

  • Creating a file management system which allows users to upload files to the server is complicated. It requires a lot more development, more file storage, more backup resources, security considerations, etc. This could be an option in the future if the current method does not work out.
  • Browser security has changed and will no longer follow "local" computer links posted on an Internet website. This is why you must setup a webserver even if the files are stored on your local computer. Only then will your browser follow the links saved in webElect.net
  • Using links to files instead of storing the file itself increases security. The files can be stored locally on the campaign's office network and inaccessible to outside users. The campaign can always open up access to the files from the Internet if desired.
